How Georgian verb tables work
Georgian verbs don't have tenses the way European languages do. They have screeves, sets of six forms (I, you, he/she, we, you all, they) that combine time, aspect, and mood. Our tables group the eleven screeves the way Georgians learn them:
- Present group: present, imperfect, present subjunctive. What happens or is happening.
- Future group: future, conditional, future subjunctive. Usually the present plus a preverb like და- or გა-.
- Aorist group: aorist (simple past) and optative (wishes, "should"). This is where the famous case switch happens, the subject takes -მა or -მ.
- Perfect group: perfect, pluperfect, perfect subjunctive. "Apparently he did it", evidential past.
- Imperative: commands, where the verb has them.
Forms shown with parentheses, like (და)ვწერე, are used both with and without the part in brackets. Forms separated by a slash are equally valid variants.
If a verb is missing a screeve, that's the language, not a gap in our data. Plenty of common verbs (like ჰქვია, "is called") simply don't have all eleven.
Tables show you the forms. The course makes them automatic.
We are building Georgian Verbs Mastery, a course that teaches the patterns behind these tables, drilled on real verbs until the right ending is the one that comes out of your mouth. Until it launches, our audio course builds the same reflexes the natural way, and the first lesson is free.
Parts of the verb data derive from the UniMorph Georgian dataset (Guriel, Goldman & Tsarfaty, ACL 2022), licensed CC BY-SA 3.0. All tables verified across independent sources.
